Wind Assisting Propulsions Systems-WAPS

Service Description

Wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) have emerged as a promising solution in the maritime sector for reducing fuel consumption and lowering emissions. By utilizing aerodynamic forces generated from wind, these systems supplement traditional propulsion methods and enhance overall vessel efficiency. As wind is a renewable, zero-emission, and cost-free energy source, WAPS offer a sustainable pathway toward the decarbonization of the shipping industry. These systems operate by leveraging wind-generated thrust to reduce reliance on conventional fuels. This document provides an outline of the requirements for installing wind-assisted propulsion technologies on board ships. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has acknowledged the benefits of WAPS and incorporated their effects into the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) framework, as detailed in MEPC.1/Circ. 815.
